The Animal Shelter was rather crowded today. Students from the Rose Valley school had gone there for a field trip.
All the students were surprised to see the number of dogs the Animal Shelter had. They were of varied size and breed. Some were black,
some were white or brown while others had spots all over their body.
Ms. Aniston the Animal Shelter's head, looked at their surprised faces. "This year we have the highest number of dogs and the number is so
high that we cannot bring even one more dog here" she told the students.
"But why are these dogs kept here Ms. Aniston?" asked a little girl from the group. "Well because my child they don not have any families or homes like you.
Nobody cares about them. So we bring them here. Here at Animal Shelter they get food and shelter which they cannot have outside on the roads."
"And why is that people don't care about them ? They are all so cute." questioned Abby.
Ms. Aniston smiled at Abby and said," Not only are they cute but they can be really good friends as well.
But there are others who feel that they only make their homes dirty, spoil things and are just some silly creatures. But you all can help them.
If you promise to take care of them you can adopt a dog. This way they'll get a new family and you will have a new friend".
"Can we really take them home Ms. Aniston?" Adrian who had been really quite throughout the entire episode spoke up.
Ms. Aniston looked at Adrian, his eyes were fixed on the Labrador in the front cage. "Then can I please take that Labrador Ms. Aniston?"
asked Adrian still staring at the dog. After completing all the formalities Ms. Aniston told Adrian that the Labrador will be sent to his place by the evening.
Adrian thanked Ms Aniston and promised that he will take care of him.
Adrian went back home feeling rather tensed. He knew that his parents would never allow him to get a dog at their place. But there was something about
that dog that had made Adrian instantly make up his mind to take him home. His father a businessman, was the town's richest man.
Although Mr. and Mrs. Smith loved their son a lot they still were conscientious about their status. His parents were sitting in the living room drinking coffee when Adrian got back.
"Dad, can I ask you something?" said Adrian as Mr. Smith looked up.
"What is it Adrian?"
"I adopted a today from the Anima......"
"What? a dog? you cannot be serious Adrian" said Mrs. Smith at once
"What is all this about Adrian?" asked Mr. Smith.
" Dad its the most cutest thing I've ever seen. I promise i"ll take its full responsibility and he will never interfere with anything in the house.
Please let me have it, please dad?? pleaded Adrian.
"Ok. But if we ever had any problems because of that creature....."
"I promise nothing of that sort will happen."
"Ok then. u can have it." said Mr. Smith and the matter was closed. But Mrs. Smith was still a little apprehensive about the idea of having a dog.
Abel was a brown Labrador and belonged to Mr. James. But after his death he was taken to the Animal Shelter. Abel had been really fond of his master
and Mr James equally loved Abel. After Mr James died Abel had become rather quite. He had stopped eating and nothing interested him anymore.
Abel had a short brown coloured coat which was thick and dense. His eyes were smooth clear and bright. Whenever Abel looked at him Adrian felt as
if they had a connection deep down. Within two days of getting home Abel had become really fond Adrian. He went along wherever Adrian went.
when Adrian went to school he locked Abel in his room so he wouldn't get out. Having Abel with him had also affected Adrian's life a lot. He now had company
and had started to smile. He shared everything with Abel. They were like best friends.
But there was just one problem. Adrian's mother was always finding ways to throw Abel out of the house. She had problems with whatever he did.
And most of the time it was Adrian who had to face his mother's wrath because of Abel. But he never said anything.
He always said to Abel that he didn't care what his mother said and was never affected by her actions. But Abel never liked to see Adrian getting hurt because oh him.
He felt equally hurt. Abel tried to do his best to not to come in Mrs. Smith's way. But whatever he did Mrs. Smith always found a reason to be angry at him.
Mrs Smith was sick and tired of that dog living in her house. She had tried everything in her power to get him out of the house but nothing helped. She had had enough of it.
Then one fine day Mrs Smith thought that if she could not get him out the house she'll have him killed. She immediately called one of his servants, she had thought of a plan.
Next day when Adrian had gone to school the servant went to his room, picked up Abel and wrapped him in a sack. Abel tried his best to get away but nothing helped. The servant took him to the woods behind the house and left him there. He tried to kill him but Abel ran away. Thinking it to be the best the servant went back home and told Mrs. Smith that he had killed Abel. Mrs. Smith had never been so pleased. She paid him for his job and send him away with orders to not to speak a word about this to Adrian.
Abel was a smart dog. He had gone to the woods with Adrian once before and he knew his way back to the house. But then he thought that whats the use. Adrian daily has to go through a lot because oh him. His first owner had been really nice to him but he was now dead. Adrian got him from the Animal Shelter to give him a better life. But what did he give him in return other than his mother's hatred. so instead of going back home Abel started walking in the other direction. After walking through quite a distance Abel came across a group of people. They were all dressed in orange robes and looked weird. One of the boy from the group saw Abel looking at them. He went towards him and gave him a light pat on his head. Then he opened his bag and gave him a few biscuits to eat. Abel ate them hungrily. The boy smiled at Abel and started to walk away.
They were all going for a pilgrimage. When Abel saw the boy walking he immediately followed him.
"We are all going to Lumbini. Its a pilgrimage spot. What will you do there?" said the boy.
Lumbini is a pilgrimage spot in Nepal. It is lord Buddha's birth place and is one of the most important pilgrimage place for Buddhist's. Abel thought about it, he didn't want to live at such a place where one could others for their own benefit. Where someone else was getting hurt because of him. He thought that now probably only God will help him.
When the boy saw that Abel was not going away he decided to take him along.
After two days they reached Lumbini. Abel felt as if this was always his real calling. He immediately knew that he was in the right place.
Abel now stays with that group in Lumbini. People give him food and he is loved by everyone. He helps with whatever jobs he can, serves people an serves God.
